OBDII
Diagnostic Scanner
Checks Dealer Diagnostic Codes and Provides Real-Time
Performance Readouts
Just like the scanner consoles at the dealerships
Now it is possible for the Home or Small Shop Technician to scan the computers and sensors of newer OBD II equipped cars and light trucks. AutoTap, plus your personal computer, gives you a complete, professional style set of diagnostic read-outs showing the condition of over a hundred components in your vehicle.

You can check stored and real-time service sensor readings from your car's computer. These are the manufacturer's codes that show dealership technicians what to fix. It's valuable information, whether you make the repairs yourself or want to check that your repair shop has done the right stuff.
Even more useful, AutoTap shows exactly what's happening as you run your vehicle. It provides a continuous record of real-time readings from sensors all over your vehicle. You can even log readings to a file to track those pesky problems that disappear when the technician is looking at the car!
When you have a "Check Engine" light condition, you can use the AutoTap scanner to read the "freeze frame" readings captured at the moment the light went on. That will show exactly the conditions of operation that caused the "Check Engine" light. There's no more guessing about the problem.
If you're a racer, there's a wealth of horsepower producing information available from AutoTap. Which gas is best for foiling the power robbing knock sensors? Monitor the FI pulse width to be sure it is where you want it for maximum horsepower. Track aggravating mis-fires to a specific cylinder. Log readings through each run to be sure engine conditions and shift points are set for the lowest possible ETs.
HOW
DOES AUTOTAP WORK?
AutoTap is a "Smart" Converter Cable. It connects the special
OBD II connector on or under the dash of your car or light truck and the
RS-232 ("COM") port of your computer. A specialized
microprocessor and custom circuitry in the converter case translate the
signals from your car or truck's sensors and computer modules to
easy-reading messages on your computer screen.
Easy to read screens show the different
sensor readings. Your car provides data for 100-140 sensor readings,
called parameters in OBD II-speak. The Select/Delete feature of the
AutoTap scanner lets you pick and choose the parameters that are important
to you. You many arrange these on the screen in many different
configurations.

Once you've got a screen configuration that works for you, save it with a couple of keystrokes. Then you can bring it up quickly whenever you need it. Save as many different screen configurations as you need... for different vehicles, or perhaps one for major maintenance, one for tuning, one for quick checks at the track.
Adjustable refresh rates allow you to track quick changing parameters like RPM and O2 Sensor readings at rates up to 30 times a second. Set slower refresh rates for oil and water temperatures and other slow changing readings to optimize AutoTap's readings for best performance.
A data logging feature allows you to capture a series of readings and transfer them to a spreadsheet for charting or analysis. Once repairs are made, AutoTap allows you to clear the Diagnostic Trouble Codes with a few key strokes on your PC. You can switch between English and Metric measurements easily.
WILL AUTOTAP WORK ON MY CAR?
The currently available AutoTap Model AT1 is for American-made GM cars and
light trucks, 1996 and later, only. Models for Ford, Chrysler and imported
cars are under development. Watch this website for announcements of
additional models.

WILL AUTOTAP WORK WITH MY PC?
AutoTap is a DOS-based program, which minimizes computer RAM and hard
drive requirements. This allows it to be used with most PCs, from 286s to
the latest Pentiums. A low cost used 286 or 386 laptop makes an ideal
in-car monitor. Or use your desktop PC. The AutoTap software is easy to
install in either a DOS-based PC or a Windows machine. Included are a 4'
cable to connect your vehicle to the AutoTap and a 6' cable to connect the
AutoTap converter to your PC. You can extend the PC cable up to 50'.
EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS
Minimum Equipment Requirements: IBM-compatible 286 or better. RS-232 ("COM")
port. 640k RAM or greater. 3.5" floppy drive. DOS 3.3 or better.
Windows computers can run AutoTap as a DOS program. A monitor that
supports graphics is recommended. The more hard drive space available, the
more information can be logged.
Computer Knowledge Requirements
AutoTap is very user friendly. Anyone with a computer can load and run
the software in DOS or the DOS shell of Windows. The screens are self
prompting and user configurable.
Automotive Technical Knowledge
Requirements
AutoTap shows the readings coming from the various sensors and DTCs,
stored in the computer of your car. While it shows you what the problem
is, it does not provide step-by-step repair data. AutoTap does not take
the place of a service manual or skilled technician.
